Plants in the bedroom: they hurt or help the oxygenation?

Have you ever heard that keeping in your bedroom a plant or flowers, while sleeping, can cause you harm? Surely! The reason for this belief is that during the day, they release oxygen to effect the photosynthesis, at night, due to the absence of light, they produce carbon dioxide which threatens our respiratory activity.
It is ,actually, a true urban legend! If you just have a thought on it, no one has ever died from lack of oxygen sleeping in the woods. Indeed, anyone who has ever done a camp knows that, despite the few comforts, in the morning you wake up in a good mood, very refreshed and less stressed than before you went to sleep.
Maybe, according to this belief, you have had to give up keeping next to your bed a beautiful bouquet of flowers just received as a gift or having reviewed your interior design projects, you deprived yourself of colors and patterns that only flowers are able to give.
Well, do not do that anymore! Plants and flowers are indispensable elements of furniture and do well. Find out why!

Although it is true that plants absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide, it is also true that the amount is to be considered harmless to the human body.
In practice, it is like sleeping with another person. Certainly this does not present a mortal threat to your safety!
The plants also carry out important functions, like reducing stress levels, adjusting the level of humidity and removing harmful substances in the air. One or more plants can therefore make the environment in which you sleep more beautiful, intimate, relaxing and healthy, too.
Well then, the plants can also stay in the bedroom, where we spend much of our time. They give a far from negligible contribution to clean air. Just think that in the home, including heated appliances, gas cookers, detergents and deodorants, the carbon monoxide and other harmful gases can exceed up to three times the maximum tolerance threshold that the law establishes for outdoor environments.
Here is a summary of the benefits to keeping a plant in the bedroom:

  • • It improves air quality
  • • It reduces anxiety and stress
  • • It gives a good smell to the environment
  • • It provides relief from headaches
  • • Improves mood
  • • It prevents colds
  • • Improves brain function
  • • Helps prevent insomnia and improve sleep quality

Being able to choose the right plant to keep at home is very important, because this could have a significant impact on quality of life. Let's see what are the most suitable for your bedroom!

Plant in the bedroom: Sanseveria

SANSEVERIA OR MOTHER-IN-LAW’S TONGUE

Renamed just like "the bedroom plant", the Sanseveria or mother-in-law’s tongue works at night, consuming carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. Known for its purifying properties, it reduces the risk of eye irritation, respiratory illnesses and headaches.
With fleshy and shiny long leaves, this plant needs plenty of light and little care because of its characteristics of a succulent plant. It should not be, in fact, watered frequently. During the winter, it would be enough even only once a month, depending on the internal temperature of the house.

Plant in the bedroom: Aloe Vera

ALOE VERA

Another plant to be kept absolutely in your bedroom is the Aloe. The properties of this species are known to all and exploited in preparations "home-made", gels and creams of all kinds.
Ideal for irritated skin and effective as a detoxifier for the body, the Aloe is easy to grow and purifies the air in an excellent manner.
Another interesting aspect of the Aloe is to work as a bioindicator: the plant, when it finds itself in an environment rich with chemical pollutants, brown dots appear on it. This states, unequivocally, poor environmental sanitation. In this way, positioning it in the room, it will help you get a healthier environment because, at the first signs, you can ventilate the room or make changes to it.

Plant in the bedroom: Gelsomino

JASMINE

Jasmine is one of the plants with more calming and relaxing effects. Its inebriating fragrance has a sedative effect which greatly improves the quality of sleep.
If you are a romantic type and in the bedroom you also want to regain the passion, then Jasmine is the plant for you! The intense aroma that gives off at night, gives the jasmine an aphrodisiac and, especially in women, it stimulates and amplifies erotic and sensual fantasies, relieving anxieties, fears and emotional difficulties.
Pay attention to its cultivation, since many species of this climbing plants are fragile. Use a low vase and abundant topsoil.
