Why is it important to have a good breakfast?

Published in Book Rest in April 2016 by Marion’s editors

Hearty breakfast, not hasty, to be enjoyed slowly

Some like to have it in a café’, in bed, running down the stairs and even in the car while they are driving to work ... we are talking about the most important meal of the day: breakfast. We have surely heard a million of times that it is a good food habit and skipping it could be harmful. But there are some people who do not have appetite in the morning or those who decide to skip this meal, perhaps enticed by trusted friends or simply reassured by the results of some promising research. Is it right or wrong? Keep reading...

Dietitians and nutritionists recommend eating a big breakfast, not hasty, to be enjoyed with calm and that would give us the right energy to start the day. Not for nothing in the Nordic countries, where it is very cold, breakfast is rich in protein: eggs, salmon, sausages, meat and beans.
In our country is much simpler. For many, Italian breakfast is synonymous of croissant and cappuccino. However, there has been a sort of "internationalization" of the breakfast made in Italy that is not always just a croissant and cappuccino, but also yogurt, cereal, smoothies or fruit juice, biscuits and jam, or other types of homemade sweets. Compared to Italy, breakfasts from all over the world are more varied and also include "salty" products. The most famous is the English Breakfast where tea and milk, fruit juices and coffee accompany bacon, sausage and beans, eggs, toast, and if we think of the US, pancakes with maple syrup immediately spring to mind.

A royal breakfast,

a princely lunch

and a poor dinner

The proverbs always conceal wise truth and there is no one more significant than this proverb! For a proper diet, in fact, it is necessary to respect the biological rhythms of the body. The choice of the food, therefore, should be geared to the actual physiological needs in relation to the time of the day that we are living.
The advice of distributing food in the early part of the day, summarized in the aphorism, is confirmed by some studies that have documented a higher consumption of energy especially in the early hours of the morning. Let us reflect on what happens in our bodies while we are sleeping: the body remains in "movement", constantly operative to fulfill the vital functions such as breathing, brain, circulation, etc ... It comes easy to understand the fact that, especially in the morning and after 8 hours of fasting, our body has the need to recharge thanks to the food that we introduce with a good breakfast. Very often it happens that we allow ourselves to be fooled by deceptive reasoning that sees the elimination of calories introduced with breakfast, as a way to lose weight more easily. It is a big mistake! Instead, if your target is losing weight, skipping breakfast makes it more difficult to keep the appetite undercontrol in view of the two main meals (lunch and dinner) and helps to develop a feeling of hunger which results in a very high consumption of more abundant portions of food than usual.

The ideal breakfast

In order to provide all the essential nutrients to energize our body before starting a new busy day, you should not only drink hastily a cup of coffee in a café, perhaps with 3-4 spoonfuls of sugar, accompanied by a delicious stuffed croissant! A breakfast like that introduces too many "simple" carbs with a high-glycemic (sugar) index and an excessive amount of fat.
The type of breakfast that experts recommend is composed of:

milk or yogurt
whole grains
coffee or tea
fruit or juice

Of course this type of breakfast is hardly feasible in a café. It is good practice to prepare it at home every morning, sitting comfortably and eating it slowly (at least for 10 minutes!).
Are you willing to set the alarm 10 minutes earlier than usual? After all, you it takes the same time that you would spend in a cafe’, but in addition, you will save € 2 per day which does not hurt our pockets and makes us earn in quality, health and energy!
